Twenty-eight Artworks by Modern Masters Donated to SMoCA

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art [SMoCA] is honored to announce the generous donation from Karla Goldschmidt of twenty-seven sculptures by modern masters. These works were featured in the fall 2007 exhibition Good Form: The Goldschmidt Collection of (small-scale) sculpture at SMoCA, which was a short history of modern sculpture and a tribute to the exquisite collection built by Karla and her late husband Walter, a founding board member of SMoCA.

The highlights of the Goldschmidt donation include works by Jean Arp, Gary Beals, Larry Bell, Fletcher Benton, Anthony Caro, Lynn Chadwick, Mark di Suvero, Charles Ginnever, Dimitri Hadzi, John Henry, Barbara Hepworth, Jacques Lipchitz, Clement Meadmore, Henry Moore, Reuben Nakian, A.R. Penck, Beverly Pepper, George Rickey, Kenji Umeda, and Bernar Venet. The Goldschmidts primarily collected sculpture of an intimate, domestic scale-with an eye for exquisite abstract from and a rare depth of knowledge.

Susan Krane, director, said, "Walter and Karla have long been beloved members of the Museum's community as well as close friends. We are honored that this gift to SMoCA becomes part of their legacy in the Valley. The Goldschmidt Collection offers Arizona audiences a rare and intimate version of the history of modernist sculpture. Our only regret is that Walter is not here to celebrate this generous gift with us, as we had hoped. This donation reflects the Goldschmidt's incredible kindness and civic spirit-as well as their astute vision and mutual love of art."

As spokesperson for the family, Susan Goldschmidt states, "My parents shared an enthusiasm for collecting modern art. They made each acquisition a joyful experience. We are pleased to keep the sculpture collection together through this donation to SMoCA. The museum held great importance to them both."
