Want to make a difference with your art AND get recognized for it?

Phoenix Art Space and the Phoenix World AIDS Day Committee have partnered to provide a unique opportunity for Metro Phoenix artists to create and submit work to be included in a juried exhibit that responds to the crucial, controversial, and compelling issue of HIV/AIDS. The goal of this partnership is to afford local artists a chance to engage in critical thought and creative dialogue, increase awareness and exercise activism through art, and receive publicity, promotion, and recognition for their work as it connects with World AIDS Day and Phoenix Art Space.

With this year's theme of "Get Informed, Not Infected," Phoenix Art Space (PAS) and the World AIDS Day Committee (WAD) seek submissions of 2-D art and small sculpture that actively, distinctively, and challengingly engages with the issue of HIV/AIDS on any level, from the personal to political, local to global, as it might intersect with the diverse topics of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, economics, love, family, geography, or even health care. The topic is broad, and we encourage creative interpretations of the theme.

A jury of WAD Committee members will make a final selection of 20 submissions to be featured at the Phoenix World AIDS Day Celebration on Sunday, November 30th, 2008 at the Hilton Garden Inn. In addition to inclusion in the WAD exhibit, winning artists will be profiled in a hardcover-bound book published by Phoenix Art Space to coincide with the event.

PAS and the WAD Committee will make every effort to secure publicity for the WAD celebration, exhibit, and its artists through local print publications, periodicals, and other media, as well as to include mention of the exhibit and artists in marketing collateral and on PAS and WAD websites and Myspace pages whenever possible.

Deadline for submissions: Monday, September 1st, 2008: 5:00 pm

Restrictions

  • Artists must be residents of Maricopa County.
  • One submission per artist permitted.
  • Due to space and exhibition restrictions, submissions are limited to the following 2-D mediums: painting, drawing, photography, collage, and other mixed-media. Small sculpture and design also permitted. Literary arts, music, performance , and film/video will not be considered.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions received after Monday, September 1, 2008 at 5:00pm, are ineligible for consideration.
  • Artists must complete their submission online through the Phoenix Art Space website. The submission process requires the artist to set up a member account with Phoenix Art Space. This feature is free of charge and allows the artist to create an online profile with a bio, up to 20 annotated images, and links to their own or other arts-related websites. This account exists independent of the artistŐs official submission to the juried exhibition.
  • Submissions must include photographic images of work being considered and completion of all other required information and questions, including bios, statements, titles, dimensions, medium, and personal contact information.
  • If chosen as a finalist, you will be contacted at the phone number and/or email address provided in your submission form and asked to have your work delivered to a Phoenix location for final viewing by the jury on one of two weekend dates in late September (final dates and location TBD).
  • You are required to personally deliver or have your work delivered to this location on one of two pre-scheduled dates in order to be considered for the exhibit. The jury must be able to view your work in person prior to making a final selection. Being named a finalist does not guarantee selection for inclusion in the WAD celebration exhibit or PAS book. Twenty finalists will be selected for inclusion in the exhibit.
