BROOKE GRUCELLA
"Art and culture must be a part of my everyday life. It's intrinsic to my
interactions in society."
The root of my work stems from the influences of my upbringing in Southern California.
There I was immersed in diverse subcultures, from Chicanos to Punks to Skaters. Their
use of street art influenced my foundation and the use of graffiti aesthetic in my work.
The powerful complexity of this art inspires me. The graphic depiction of words paired
with raw imagery impacted me more than anything I had seen before.
It was this aesthetic that I wanted to develop. The density of graffiti art paired with the
complex personal and intimate content became a natural progression in my work. I
confront contrasting opposites inherent in relationships. The art communicates
universal truths interpreted through graphics and text.
The content is raw, intimate, shocking, inspiring and unsolicited. I publicly display
my exploration of the politics of sexuality to question both perception and identity. The
genre, content, imagery, artist, and audience play into an ever-changing progression in
my work. Elements of my work change, recombine, recontextualize, revise and permutate in new locations to become specific to new venues. I create contexts where
semiotics, typology, illustration, and culture is recognized and embraced in traditional gallery spaces.

A product of a Southern California upbringing; Brooke's parent's were hard working middle class beach bumz. She grew up with a father who surfed almost every morning and skateboards religiously to this day. The imagery she uses is inherent, it is a connection to her roots. As a young girl she naturally gravitated to graffiti, surf imagery,street signs and cartoons. These influences are the foundation of her personal typology and semiotics creating a universal dialog about life.
