"Sinagua Dreamtime"

This is a work in progress.
This petroglyph scene is from a large rock art panel located on the V-Bar-V Ranch outside of Sedona, Arizona. It is a beautiful site containing over 1000 petroglyphs made by the Sinagua Indians around 1150 and 1400 B.C. On rainy days the petroglyphs look like fiery, orange images trapped within the darkened surface of the rock, with brightly colored lichen, speckling the area adding almost a Milky Way backdrop to this ancient scene.
After creating this piece of stone, I matched the textures and basic colors of the actual rock art site. I then added the petroglyphs in a process similar to that used by the Sinagua people thousands of years ago. I have now begun to recreate the colorful patinas, which have formed over thousands of years on the rocks surface. Once I finish the patinas, the final process will be to add over a hundred pieces of delicate lichen to the piece, one by one, representing several of the different species that occur in the area.

The process is extremely time consuming and depending on the scene, may take weeks or even a month or more, but the results can be extraordinary, and I seem to thrive from the challenge of creating what might seem impossible. In fact, love it!
To bring these ancient works of art into the present is truly an honor.
