Coso Mountains, southeastern California

"The rock art of the Coso Mountains in southeastern California is legendary. With an estimated 100,000 petroglyphs contained within its rugged canyons, the Cosos possess the highest concentration of rock art found anywhere in North America.
For years it was thought that the ancestors of the Shoshone Indians had made most of these incredible images within the past 2,000 to 3,000 years, but new evidence suggests that the Coso`s rock art may in fact be much older, created by the first peoples to enter North America over 10,000 to 19,000 years ago.
Images of bighorn sheep dominate the rock art of the Cosos, and to the peoples that lived there, the sheep were much more than just an important source of food. Living high within these sacred mountains, the bighorns were associated with the coming of rain and were thought of as spirit helpers to the Shaman.
A spiritual relationship between bighorns and an ancient people, recorded on the blackened rocks of the mountains they lived in. To the Shoshone, the Cosos were known as "The Mountains of Fire"."
